#1 Best Lake Cabin In 2024

Introduction To The Beginning Of Pete’s Lake Cabin

You might argue with me that it’s not a lake cabin, but wait until you see the lake from Pete’s Cabin.

We are Lorrie and Chad Peterson. Our story of purchasing 20 acres overlooking the Prineville Reservoir began in 2002. Lorrie got the idea to take a road trip to Prineville. I said, “Why Prineville?” That’s how I remember it. She tells a different story, but I’m writing this article.

As we drove into Prineville, our first stop was a realtor, where Lorrie got out and asked for three properties to just drive to; we didn’t want a realtor, she said. The first property was not so hot, and we couldn’t find the second, but the third knocked our socks off.

We just stood above the slope, looking into a vast landscape of mountains with the Crooked River entering the Prineville Reservoir. I wish you could have seen our eyes popping out as we simultaneously said, “We’ve got to buy this.”

The property was surrounded on three sides by Juniper forests managed by BLM and the Forest Service. The remaining side was another 20-acre lot that was still for sale. Our first plan was to build a shop. The term has sort of morphed into barndominium, but the barn turned into a house that we called our lake cabin and later Pete’s Cabin.

The youngest of our eight kids helped where possible, installing piping for hydronic heat, painting, and staining the concrete floor. I did the HVAC since that had been my trade for many years. For me, I traveled every weekend for about a year to Prineville from Vancouver to oversee our contractors and finish my part.

If You Build It, They Will Come

It didn’t take long for the word to get out about the solitude and beauty of this place, and we knew we had a gold mine with a view. We first listed Pete’s Cabin on VRBO. As Airbnb grew in popularity, we also listed the lake house there.

One Of Many Recent Reviews For Pete’s Lake Cabin

One of the most amazing places we have ever stayed in! The views were out of this world, the place was quiet, extra clean and totally isolated from The world. You can hike for hours around the property and still have more to explore. Couldn’t have asked for a better weekend getaway. It’s crazy to say but the pics don’t do it justice, just book and and go see for yourself. Will definitely be back for another stay.

An Unforgettable Lake Cabin Experience

The Perfect Location, Location, Location

Pete’s Lake Cabin is a little remote but not so much that you can’t enjoy some nearby Central Oregon events in and around Prineville. Here’s a convenient link to Google Maps to help you locate the right spot. We haven’t had any complaints lately about the cabin being hard to find.

Arriving at nighttime can be difficult because it gets extremely dark with no moon or cloud cover. Prineville Reservoir State Park has recently been designated as a Dark Sky Park. The dark sky area includes Pete’s Cabin.

I’ve walked down the deer trails from the lake cabin to the reservoir where the Crooked River flows into the Prineville Reservoir. It’s not a bad hike, but it’s not for everyone. It’s all downhill, but you will struggle back up the hill to return. We mostly drive the short mile to the Prineville Reservoir State Park campground.

Activities and Adventures Near Pete’s Lake Cabin

Explore the Great Outdoors

Explore And Enjoy The Wildlife

Most wildlife that catches our attention is deer, birds, fish in the frying pan, and a few rattlesnakes. Children love playing with lizards.

Water Activities A Stones Throw Away (Maybe Slightly Further)

Prineville Reservoir is very active during warm weather months with boating activities. From fishing to kayaking, there’s something for everyone. Dive in and splash, or simply enjoy the peaceful sound of the water lapping against the shore.

Seasonal Delights

Winter Wonderland

When winter arrives, Pete’s Lake Cabin can be a cozy retreat. Snuggle up by the fireplace or take a brisk stroll in the snow. We don’t always get a lot of snow, but I remember one winter when I had to hire the road plowed. The sound of silence in winter provides a perfect setting for relaxation and reflection.

Another time that’s frozen in my mind. The valley below along the reservoir was covered in clouds or maybe fog. I looked down over the top of the clouds and looked up at a beautiful blue sky. You could say I was standing on the top of the clouds.
